Digitalisation permeates our lives, having revolutionised how we communicate, how we access information, how we consume goods and services, how we spend our free time, and how we interact with the world at large. It’s only natural that the dawning of the digital age would change how we acquire talent, too.
The advent of the world wide web brought about a slew of online job boards and CV databases that indiscriminately served masses of people. As the internet developed, the proportions of such platforms grew astronomically. While online job boards and CV databases certainly made candidates and open positions more accessible, these online recruiting methods bred an era of hiring that was neither precise nor specific, and was equally ineffective for both employers and job seekers. How effective is sending out mass emails or sifting through twenty pages worth of job listings? As any recruiter, marketer or job seeker could tell you, neither are effective at all.
One size does not fit all: Recruitment in the digital age requires a targeted and personalised approach that allows for the cultivation of relationships and the building of networks. It must be consumer-focused and adapted to how highly skilled professionals are now managing their careers. Modern recruitment integrates traditional recruiting skills, a marketing mindset and cutting-edge technology into a behemoth of talent acquisition. The recruitment technologies that have been commonplace until now no longer suffice, and so the recruitment industry and businesses need to adopt ‘RecTech’, an ecosystem of tools, apps, and digital platforms that perform a myriad of functionalities. Direct hiring platforms, one area of RecTech, facilitate direct communication between candidates and employers, enhancing how in-house recruitment teams acquire talent, and reducing the time needed and cost per hire.
